Review: Aftermath by Clara Kensie

Review:
Oh, Clara Kensie, the way you break my heart. AFTERMATH is an unflinching look into the worst nightmare of every family. Brilliantly written, Kensie has written a story that is one heck of an emotional roller coaster that left me thankful I got on the ride.

Watching the evolution of Charlotte as a character was amazing. From beginning to end, her growth and depth never ceased to amaze me. What this girl endures is unthinkable, but she's a survivor. Her moxy and courage are the driving force behind this book. I vacillated between standing up to cheer her on and wanting to just hug her and protect her myself.

I think what drew me most to this story is the way Kensie doesn't balk at talking about something as dark as child abduction. While she definitely doesn't glamorize or go into gory details, you know the heartache Charlotte and her family have endured. Not only does Kensie nail the emotions of a devastated family, but she also managed to infuse moments of humor to lighten some of the tension.

Overall, this is an emotionally draining but overwhelmingly satisfying book to read. Kensie is a wonderful writer that I've loved for years, and this book just further cemented that feeling.

ABOUT AFTERMATH:
Charlotte survived four long years as a prisoner in the attic of her kidnapper, sustained only by dreams of her loving family. The chance to escape suddenly arrives, and Charlotte fights her way to freedom. But an answered prayer turns into heartbreak. Losing her has torn her family apart. Her parents have divorced: Dad's a glutton for fame, Mom drinks too much, and Charlotte's twin is a zoned-out druggie. Her father wants Charlotte write a book and go on a lecture tour, and her mom wants to keep her safe, a virtual prisoner in her own home. But Charlotte is obsessed with the other girl who was kidnapped, who never got a second chance at life--the girl who nobody but Charlotte believes really existed. Until she can get justice for that girl, even if she has to do it on her own, whatever the danger, Charlotte will never be free.

ABOUT CLARA KENSIE:

Clara Kensie grew up near Chicago, reading every book she could find and using her diary to write stories about a girl with psychic powers who solved mysteries. She purposely did not hide her diary, hoping someone would read it and assume she was writing about herself. Since then, she’s swapped her diary for a computer and admits her characters are fictional, but otherwise she hasn’t changed one bit.

Today Clara is a RITA© Award-winning author of dark fiction for young adults. Her super-romantic psychic thriller series, Run To You, was named an RT Magazine Editors Pick for Best Books of 2014, and Run to You Book One: Deception So Deadly, is the winner of the prestigious 2015 RITA© Award for Best First Book.

Clara’s latest release is Aftermath, a dark, ripped-from-the-headlines YA contemporary in the tradition of Room and The Lovely BonesAftermath is on Goodreads’ list of Most Popular Books Published in November 2016, and Young Adult Books Central declared it a Top Ten Book of 2016.

Clara’s favorite foods are guacamole and cookie dough. But not together. That would be gross.

Blog Tour: Mind Games by Heather W. Petty

FAST 5 with Heather W. Petty!

Last book you read:
HISTORY IS ALL YOU LEFT ME by Adam Silvera, and my heart will never recover…not ever. I wrote a rambling review of the book and of Adam’s tallness on Goodreads, but you really should just read the book as soon as you can and then find me so we can talk about it. I will most likely weep. You have been warned.

Last thing that made you cry:
This poem by Lucille Clifton:
sorrows
who would believe them winged
who would believe they could be
beautiful    who would believe
they could fall so in love with mortals
that they would attach themselves
as scars attach and ride the skin
sometimes we hear them in our dreams
rattling their skulls    clicking
their bony fingers
they have heard me beseeching
as i whispered into my own
cupped hands    enough    not me again
but who can distinguish
one human voice
amid such choruses
of desire
Last thing that made you smile:
My daughter and I trying to read from the French edition of LOCK & MORI. She was very impressed at my ability to translate the Title page. (My eighth grade French class finally pays off!!)
Favorite quote:
“In almost every artist's nature is inborn a wanton and treacherous proneness to side with the beauty that breaks hearts.” -- Thomas Mann
Last thing you treated yourself to:
I’m a little tea-obsessed. And my favorite teas right now come from T-WE Teas out of San Francisco. First, because the tea blends are amazing. But also because the descriptions of the teas on the website are hilarious, and every order comes with a cute little note from the person who packed the box. My most recent “treat” was a refill of their Chai Hard blend, which we go through very quickly in my house.
ABOUT MIND GAMES:
Sherlock Holmes and Miss James “Mori” Moriarty may have closed their first case, but the mystery is far from over in the thrilling sequel to Lock & Mori, perfect for fans of Maureen Johnson and Sherlock.

You know their names. Now discover their beginnings.

Mori’s abusive father is behind bars…and she has never felt less safe. Threatening letters have started appearing on her doorstep, and the police are receiving anonymous tips suggesting that Mori—not her father—is the Regent’s Park killer. To make matters worse, the police are beginning to believe them.

Through it all, Lock—frustrating, brilliant, gorgeous Lock—is by her side. The two of them set out to discover who is framing Mori, but in a city full of suspects, the task is easier said than done. With the clock ticking, Mori will discover just how far she is willing to go to make sure that justice is served, and no one—not even Lock—will be able to stop her.

ABOUT HEATHER W. PETTY:
Heather Petty has been obsessed with mysteries since she was twelve, which is when she decided that stories about murders in London drawing rooms and English seaside villages were far superior to all other stories. She is the author of the Lock & Mori series. She lives in Reno, Nevada, with her husband, daughter, and four hopelessly devious cats. You can visit her online at HeatherWPetty.com.

Blog Tour: Spindle by E.K. Johnson

ABOUT SPINDLE:
The world is made safe by a woman...but it is a very big world.

It has been generations since the Storyteller Queen drove the demon out of her husband and saved her country from fire and blood. Her family has prospered beyond the borders of their village, and two new kingdoms have sprouted on either side of the mountains where the demons are kept prisoner by bright iron, and by the creatures the Storyteller Queen made to keep them contained.

But the prison is crumbling. Through years of careful manipulation, a demon has regained her power. She has made one kingdom strong and brought the other to its knees, waiting for the perfect moment to strike. When a princess is born, the demon is ready with the final blow: a curse that will cost the princess her very soul, or force her to destroy her own people to save her life.

The threads of magic are tightly spun, binding princess and exiled spinners into a desperate plot to break the curse before the demon can become a queen of men. But the web of power is dangerously tangled--and they may not see the true pattern until it is unspooled.

ABOUT E.K. JOHNSTON:

E.K. Johnston had several jobs and one vocation before she became a published writer. If she’s learned anything, it’s that things turn out weird sometimes, and there’s not a lot you can do about it. Well, that and how to muscle through awkward fanfic because it’s about a pairing she likes.
Her books range from contemporary fantasy (The Story of Owen, Prairie Fire), to fairy-tale reimaginings (A Thousand Nights, Spindle), and from small town Ontario (Exit, Pursued By A Bear), to a galaxy far, far away (Star Wars: Ahsoka). She has no plans to rein anything in.
You can follow Kate on Twitter (@ek_johnston) to learn more about Alderaanian political theory than you really need to know, or on Tumblr (ekjohnston) and Instagram (ek_johnston) if you're just here for pretty pictures.

Full of familiar, fan-favorite characters and no two people more deserving of a happy ending, Fire In You will burn bright beyond the last page…

Jillian Lima’s whole world was destroyed in a span of a few hours. The same night her childhood love, Brock ‘the Beast’ Mitchell, broke her heart, her life was irrevocably altered by the hand of a stranger with a gun. It takes six years to slowly glue together the shattered pieces of her life, but Jillian is finally ready to stop existing in a past full of pain and regret. She takes a job at her father’s martial arts Academy and she’s going out on her first date since a failed relationship that was more yuck than yum. Jillian is determined to start living.
She just never expected Brock to be a part of her life again. But he’s firmly back in her life before she knows it, and not only is he older, he’s impossibly more handsome, more teasing and more everything. And when he sees Jillian, he’s no longer capable of thinking of her as the little girl who was his shadow growing up or the daughter of the man who gave him a second chance at life. He sees the woman who’d always been there for him, the one person who believed in him no matter what.
Brock knows she’s the one he should’ve made his, and what begins as a tentative friendship quickly turns to red-hot chemistry that sparks a flame that burns brighter than lust. Falling for Brock again risks more than her heart, because when the sorrow-filled and guilt-ridden past resurfaces, and a web of lies threatens to rip them apart, the fallout could lay waste to everything they’ve fought to build together, and destroy the dreams of those they care most about.

As always Jennifer L. Armentrout proves she is one of my all-time favorite authors. Her quick wit and vivacious characters are some of my favorite to read and that holds extra true for FIRE IN YOU. Y'all there is definitely some fire in this book.

This book can absolutely be read as a standalone, but I'm guessing you'll be scrambling to start from book 1 before you make it out of the first chapter.

Blog Tour: Of Fire and Stars

Fast 5 with Audrey Coulthurst

Last book you read: I just finished reading Relative Strangers (Candlewick, 2018) by my dear friend and critique partner, Paula Garner. It’s about a teen girl who finds out she spent part of her early childhood in foster care when her mom was struggling with addiction. She sets out to find the family that cared for her and ends up falling for her former foster brother. I love the voice in the book—the main character, Jules, is so wry and loves food as much as I do. One of the best parts of being an author is getting to read other authors’ work before it comes out.

Last trip you took: Austin, Texas. I used to live there and still travel there a lot for work, but on my last trip I was there for the Texas Teen Book Festival. Hanging out with other authors is always a good time!

Favorite bookish moment:  Meeting Mercedes Lackey earlier this year. Her books were a huge part of my life as a teen, so getting to meet her as an adult and an author was surreal. She was fun to talk to, incredibly kind, and then at the end of our conversation told me she’d just finished reading my book and had enjoyed it. I almost fainted on the spot. I wish I could go back and tell 13-year-old me that one day her favorite author would blurb a book she wrote.

Last thing you treated yourself to: Sushi! There is an amazing sushi place close to my work, so sometimes when I have a hard day I’ll take myself to lunch there. I always leave feeling more cheerful.

Last emoticon you used: I’d like to pretend I’m classy and say a regular smiley face, but it was probably poop, the scream face, or a tongue sticking out.

ABOUT OF FIRE AND STARS:
Betrothed since childhood to the prince of Mynaria, Princess Dennaleia has always known what her future holds. Her marriage will seal the alliance between Mynaria and her homeland, protecting her people from other hostile lands. But Denna has a secret. She possesses an Affinity for fire—a dangerous gift for the future queen of a kingdom where magic is forbidden.

Now, Denna must learn the ways of her new home while trying to hide her growing magic. To make matters worse, she must learn to ride Mynaria’s formidable warhorses before her coronation—and her teacher is the person who intimidates her most, the prickly and unconventional Princess Amaranthine (called Mare), sister of her betrothed.

When a shocking assassination leaves the kingdom reeling, Mare and Denna reluctantly join forces to search for the culprit. As the two work together, each discovers there’s more to the other than she thought. Mare is surprised by Denna’s intelligence and bravery, while Denna is drawn to Mare’s independent streak. Soon their friendship is threatening to blossom into something more.

But with dangerous conflict brewing that makes the alliance more important than ever, acting on their feelings could be deadly. Forced to choose between their duty and their hearts, Mare and Denna must find a way to save their kingdoms—and each other
